How grid balancing works

Companies responsible for the electrical grid around the world, so-called TSOs, are requesting grid balancing services in multiple different categories on an hourly basis all year around.

The challenge

Due to the growing awareness of environmental issues and increased political focus on greener energy, our energy production is increasingly shifting towards renewable sources such as wind and solar power. This transition benefits both us and the planet, but it also introduces new challenges.

With traditional energy sources like coal, we could easily adjust electricity production to meet our needs. However, this is not the case with wind and solar energy, as we cannot control when the wind blows or when the sun shines. The increasing share of renewable energy sources therefore presents a growing challenge in balancing electricity production and consumption. This imbalance can have significant consequences for the stability of the electricity we rely on every day.

How we can help

The challenge of instability in the electrical grid can be helped by the utilization of grid balancing services or ancillary services, which works by adding electricity to the grid when too little is produced and removing electricity when too much is produced, in relation to our consumption.

Emaldo® systems have this very purpose built into the very core and all aspects of our systems, from hardware to software and connectivity, are optimized to provide the most efficient, stable and profitable grid balancing services available.

How it works

By virtually connecting all Emaldo® systems through the Emaldo® Grid Rewards programme, we create one giant battery or a so-called Virtual Power Plant, VPP. We use the large scale capacity of the Emaldo® VPP and the extremely fast batteries in our systems to help balance the electricity grid, better and in more categories than any other grid balancing provider in the market.

The benefits

Enrolling a system into the Emaldo® Grid Rewards program helps the green transition and the environment. It is completely free for the system owner to join and there is absolutely no limitations to the use or functionality of the system, even when participating in grid balancing.

Both the system owner and installer will automatically receive payouts based on the previous month contribution, directly to their bank accounts.

Our batteries

Our low-voltage battery technology is not only safer, but it is lightning fast and makes our batteries true grid balancing power houses.

Being up to 440% faster than other solutions, they support the green transition like nothing else and balances the grid 2x as efficient as even the best competing batteries in the market.

We do more balancing

Our purpose-built technologies and native hardware and software synergy, allows us to bid on even more grid balancing services in multiple categories, including the more advanced rapid response categories such as FFR.

Bidding in more categories every single hour of the day, all year around, drastically increases our contribution to the green transition and directly benefiting both system owners and installers.

The revenue generated in the Emaldo® Grid Rewards program is based on the demand for balancing services from local grid operators, which are put out to tender. Emaldo® bids on these tenders across all available service categories, including FCR-D up, FCR-D down, FCR-N, and FFR, to maximize returns for program participants. The number of tenders and successful bids depends on how frequently imbalances occur in the grid due to discrepancies between electricity production and consumption. Therefore, the revenue generated in the Emaldo® Grid Rewards program is inherently variable and will fluctuate from payout to payout.

Why we truely stand out

We bid in more services

At Emaldo®, our batteries are purposefully developed and optimized for grid balancing, offering industry-leading charging and discharging speeds—up to 440% faster than standard solutions. This unparalleled performance enables us to compete in the most demanding rapid-response categories, where speed and precision are crucial.

Thanks to this advanced technology, we consistently place and win more bids, maximizing revenue potential in ways that other grid balancing service providers simply cannot match. Our commitment to innovation and performance ensures that Emaldo® systems are always at the forefront of grid balancing services, delivering exceptional value to our partners.

Individual device management

At Emaldo®, our ability to manage each connected system individually sets us apart from other grid balancing service providers. Unlike others in the market who rely on integrating hardware from various third-party manufacturers, we develop and manufacture our own devices. This unique approach allows us to offer multiple grid balancing services simultaneously, enabling us to place significantly more bids and generate higher revenue for the program.

Many grid balancing service providers are constrained by their use of disparate third-party hardware, which forces them to manage their entire device fleet as a single unit. This limitation reduces efficiency, as they must lower the performance of all devices to a common baseline, ultimately restricting their capacity and the number of balancing services they can offer.

This lack of flexibility in device management not only affects service reliability but also significantly impacts revenue potential in some regions, e.g. Sweden. Providers constrained by this inflexibility are only permitted to bid on 15% of the total traded capacity, leaving 85% of potential revenue untapped.

At Emaldo®, our individual device management capability eliminates these constraints, ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability, and profitability for grid balancing services.

Purpose-built for grid balancing

Emaldo® systems are meticulously engineered from the ground up to excel in grid balancing services. Our systems integrate high-speed batteries and built-in 4G cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth™ communication, eliminating the need for additional hardware or costly customization. This "out-of-the-box" functionality not only reduces the system owner's costs but also minimizes the risk of failures and communication errors.

By leveraging our fully integrated technology, Emaldo® ensures that grid balancing services are more robust and stable compared to solutions that rely on third-party hardware. Our systems deliver consistent, reliable performance, making Emaldo® the trusted choice for seamless grid balancing.

Full overview and control

With Emaldo® systems, grid balancing services are seamlessly integrated, providing both system owners and installers with a complete overview of self-produced electricity, consumption, and grid balancing participation—all within a single application. This unified platform eliminates the need to juggle multiple apps, simplifying the management of the system's impact on the household and offering a clear view of grid balancing contributions.

By consolidating all essential information into one intuitive interface, Emaldo® enhances convenience and control, ensuring that both energy management and grid balancing are straightforward and efficient.
