  • Two 180kW ZOE DC fast chargers from Z BOX-EV series, each backed by 218kWh of battery storage and powered by solar, are operating from a site with just a 63A grid connection

  • Emaldo combines battery storage, intelligent energy management and charging hardware into a single integrated ecosystem

  • Funded in part by Klimatklivet and supported by the Ladda Landsbygden initiative, the site establishes a blueprint for rural electrification without expensive grid upgrades

KALMAR, Sweden - September 23, 2026 - Smart energy solutions provider Emaldo today announced the official opening of a landmark fast-charging location in Rockneby, Kalmar Municipality. Located along the E22 highway, the site features Sweden’s first two installed ZOE DC fast chargers from the Z Box-EV series. Supported by on-site solar energy generation and Emaldo’s integrated energy storage and management system, the chargers provide up to 360kW of combined DC charging capacity from a site with just a 63A grid connection.

Sweden’s transition to electric mobility cannot stop at major cities and motorways. For electric vehicles to become a practical choice everywhere, reliable fast charging must be accessible in rural areas and smaller communities. However, expanding high-power charging infrastructure outside urban hubs frequently faces severe grid capacity limitations, power shortages, and prohibitive connection costs, with a conventional 360kW DC charging installation requiring a substantially larger grid connection.

Emaldo solves these structural challenges through its end-to-end energy ecosystem. By pairing fast charging with localized battery storage and dynamic power orchestration, the installation does not require the grid to deliver the full charging power in real time. Instead, the batteries store energy generated by an on-site solar energy system and provide additional power when vehicles need it. In other words, 360kW of DC charging capacity can operate with a 63A grid connection for the first time because the battery storage provides power when the grid cannot.

The site utilizes the Z BOX-EV technology concept, an integrated energy storage and EV charging solution from ZOE Energy Storage, engineered specifically for commercial properties, logistics hubs, heavy transport, and commercial fleets. Each unit delivers up to 180kW of fast charging and is backed by 218kWh of integrated battery storage, optimizing power availability, operational stability, and long-term efficiency under constrained grid conditions.

At the center of the project is Badie Nabi, a local restaurant and store owner in Rockneby who seized the opportunity to serve his community while building a new commercial revenue stream. The technology makes it possible for local business owners like Badie to integrate high-power charging without waiting for a major grid connection upgrade.

“This investment means a lot for rural communities and the environment,” said Badie. “For me, it is also about being part of the solution and contributing to the important transition towards renewable energy and electrification.”

The deployment was made possible through Ladda Landsbygden, a regional initiative funded by Region Kalmar County and local municipalities, aimed at accelerating charging infrastructure where commercial rollout is typically challenging. Managed by Miljöfordon Sverige, the initiative helped secure 50% co-funding through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet investment grant.

“If we are to succeed in the transition to more electric vehicles across the country, we also need charging opportunities across the entire country, including in rural areas,” said Jonas Lööf, representative for Miljöfordon Sverige and Ladda Landsbygden.

Emaldo provided the complete integrated energy architecture for the site, managing everything from energy asset orchestration to final installation and commissioning.

“Electrification cannot stop at the major cities,” said Henri Stendalen, Sales Manager at Emaldo. “The energy solutions of the future must work everywhere, even where conditions are different. Rural communities should not have to wait for the future.”

With this first of its kind installation, the Rockneby site demonstrates how renewable energy paired with integrated battery storage can make high-power charging possible where conventional grid infrastructure would fall short.
